Some State Games of America Events Get Head Start This Weekend

Competition in volleyball, pocket billiards and some shooting sports will get underway this weekend at the 2015 State Games of America (SGA) in and around Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. More than 100 adult volleyball teams will begin play at indoor sites throughout Lincoln starting Saturday, July 25. Volleyball competition will continue through August 2.

Pocket billiards team events will be held at Madsen’s Bowling and Billiards in Lincoln July 25–26. Individual matches will begin August 1.

Shooting sports start Friday, July 24, with pistol events at the Weeping Water Gun Club. Pistol competition continues through July 26. Trap shooting at Lincoln Trap and Skeet begins Sunday, July 26, while the .22 rifle prone competition is also July 26 at the Weeping Water Gun Club.

SGA 2015 is approaching 15,000 entries and is already the largest State Games of America competition since the event began in 1999. Athletes from 47 states and the District of Columbia are expected to participate. Competition in most of the 67 events begins July 28 and concludes August 2.

SGA 2015 is expected to have a $20 million impact on the economy of the Lincoln/Omaha area. Nearly 4,000 hotel rooms have been reserved through the SGA Lodging Bureau.

More than 3,000 volunteers are registered to help with SGA 2015 and more spots are available. Volunteers assist with competitions, onsite medical care, communications and other event operations.

Opening Ceremonies are Friday, July 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. The event features former Olympians Jordan Burroughs and Lolo Jones, and Chicago Bulls forward Doug McDermott, a former Creighton All-American. McDermott, Jones and Burroughs will sign autographs prior to the Opening Ceremonies at the SGA SportFest at Hawks Championship Center from 4:30–6:00 p.m.

Opening Ceremonies are free for all competitors. The event is open to the public with the purchase of an all-event SuperPass, or individual tickets may be purchased; $15 for adults, $5 for students aged 6–18, children under five are free. The Army’s Golden Knights parachute team will lead off the entertainment which includes Nebraska native Brian Deegan’s Metal Mulisha freestyle motocross daredevils.

August 2, 2015 - The largest national State Games of America on record wrapped up weekend competition, bidding farewell to more than 15,000 athletes from 47 states. Sunday action kicked off early with a 25, 50 and 100-mile cycling tour northwest of Lincoln, skydiving in Weeping Water and a triathlon at Holmes Lake. A high point of the Games, 1968 Olympic track and field athlete Carol Frost set new American records (70-74 age group) in shot put and discus. July 30, 2015 - Executive Director of the Nebraska Sports Council, Dave Mlnarik, announced that the United States Army Golden Knights parachute team will not perform at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2015 State Games of America (SGA). July 17, 2015 - The 2015 State Games of America has exceeded 14,500 entries for the first time in the history of the event. Registration remains open for many events at SGA2015.com. Some sports allow onsite entry as well. Competition in most events begins July 28 at sites in and around Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, and concludes Aug. 2.
